The IB Programe, founded in 1968, with 2668 schools in 141 countries offers primary school, middle and post matriculation course – the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBD) which essentially develops all IBD candidates to emerge as fully fledged, active learners, well-rounded individual citizens as global participants, irrespective of their total points aggregate achieved during the IBD examinations in May or in November sessions of each year, or the degree from Ivy Colleges. To quote recent International Baccalaureate Organisation report, “which analyzes the alignment of the IB Diploma Programme standards and the Knowledge and Skills for University Success (KSUS) college-ready standards, found IB standards to be “highly aligned with the KSUS standards.” In particular, the key cognitive strategies emphasized in the Diploma—critical thinking skills, intellectual inquisitiveness and interpretation—were found to be fully aligned with the expectations of university faculty” .
The study, led by David Conley, confirmed that IB Diploma Programme standards demonstrate a very high degree of alignment with the KSUS standards in all subject areas. In math, complete alignment was found between the IB Diploma’s mathematical studies and the KSUS’ algebra, trigonometry and statistics standards. In science, the 47 IB chemistry standards, 19 biology standards and the concepts of environmental science embedded in all three IB science courses aligned completely with KSUS. The IBD academic preparation based on the selected three IB subjects at higher level and the three at Standard level from the IB octagon provide the broadest foundation in modern secondary education. This preparation sustains an entry to wide variety of faculties at tertiary institutes, from Medicine, Engineering, Sciences, Humanities, Commerce or Law. The dogmatic, either or none - ‘one faculty’ – concept in education has long disappeared since the inception of the IB diploma curricular since1963.
IB is recognized as the supreme tertiary education entrance qualifications as per latest ECIS release. The ‘Ivy Colleges’ seek top IB candidates globally. The ‘IB schools’ with good academic coaching, counseling produce world class candidates with excellent diploma point aggregates. These institutes have almost certified the availability of top quality undergraduates, annually. The awards of full scholarships, bursaries to the high caliber IB candidates by the top tertiary institutes have become the recent norm.
“Founded in 1968, the IB works with 2,668 schools in 137 countries to develop and offer three challenging programs to over 725,000 students aged 3 to 19 years. The IB encourages students to be active learners, well-rounded individuals and engaged world citizens. It also serves in an educational advisory capacity to other educational organizations. Piaget developed his theory of ‘educational psychology and development’ by closely observing and recording the various stages of physical and psychological development of his two sons. The awesome experiences of 27 years in the International Baccalaureate educational system, 21 in a United World College (UWC) provided the stage amidst thousands of secondary scholars my children in the only UWC on African Soil. 1982 to 1988, provided the space for the first born – today a specialist Pediatrician specialist in the US, followed by the second a Financial Director in a mega Industry in Swaziland, the third Chief Director at Housing and Strategic Planning in South Africa and the fourth a business entrepreneur, promoting international trade and managing an international Information Technology Company.
Versatility in the IB curricular, correct selection of the six IB academic subjects, compulsory participation in Creativity Activity and Service (CAS), the submission of an Extended Essay (maximum 4000 words), along with all subject Internal Assessment (IA) requirements emerges the cocoons with its best IB Diploma.
The latest official IB subject guidelines (2009-2013) were examined for the first time in May 2010. The changes and the style of assessments have exposed the IB candidates to a greater height of academic excellence. The May 2010 IB Diploma results due in July 2010 will endorse the success of the latest IB candidates who are either already admitted or have obtained provisional acceptances in tertiary institutes from September 2010.
Pre-requirements.
IB Examination (IBEX) affiliated schools globally are over 1500, with 13 United World Colleges punctuated from East to West. Tutoring has become a special concern of parents as much as the students to excel at its best. I was surprised when one of my best friends, a Professor in Mathematics, as early as 1980s taking his daughter to a tutor in Mathematics? My dismay was answered when I heard the drive via tutoring, three decades ago being to strive 99 from 95, or 88 from 84, struggle 60 from 50%. That was the societal acceptance then. It has now grown by three fold, I believe and we need to have more experienced, dedicated IB global tutors in all subjects as required by all IB candidates. It is surprising to note the parental acceptance of private tutors as better solution providers to the ailing academic standards of all pupils.
